“Whose number is this?” Ever found yourself muttering this question to yourself, holding your phone in front of you while an unknown number flashes on your screen? Not only that is irritating but gives rise to curiosity to find out the identity of the caller.

There are two kinds of unknown callers. One is when an unknown number flashes on your screen and another is “Private Number” flashing on your screen. Here is the thing about latter; it is very difficult to trace a private number because he is paying to keep his identity hidden. Not that it is impossible, but one has to go by the book method or even file a formal request for that matter; not to mention paying some fees also.

Phone operator service:

Service providers provide a special service for tracing unknown callers. This usually is not included in the typical package you take up. One has to pay extra for taking up this service.

GPS tracking:

This is not a caller identification method but there are plenty of websites that helps you trace the location of the number. With the help of this aspect you may be able to narrow down your research.

Phone directories:

This method cannot be neglected. Most of the numbers are listed in phone directories but finding a number of a place or person is easier than find a person or place for a particular number. Yes, it is very tiresome and time consuming method but it is worth a try.

Websites for called identify:

There are a few handful of websites that are available for identify the caller but these are usually specified to a particular region or country. Not a very versatile solution but it could be a solution for some. They also may charge you some fees. 

Filing a complaint:

This method comes in handy when you feel that you are being stalked. It is the best method and is also error proof. Person will get punished for taking away your piece of mind.

Advertisement/Telemarketing calls:

These calls come with a specific number pattern. With the help of this fact you can neglect the incoming call and go back to your regular chore. Some service providers also provide with a facility to block such calls if you are willing to pay a small amount.
